Well after some bumps in the road I am back to working on the Shay project. I will be using the castings and prints from Richard Ulin of Ulin locomotive works. I started this project a few years back and had to stop unexpectedly. Today I knocked the dust of the steel I bought long ago, plugged in the chop saw, fired up the welder and got back to work. So far getting a second set of prints was the hardest part but thats a whole different story. I am starting with the frames and trucks since I can complete large portions of these parts without castings. If all goes as planned I will start ordering castings at the end of this year.

Here is what I accomplished today.

I started by cutting the steel to make up the tender frame.

Next I started welding the pieces together. I tacked the frame together first, then I welded the assembly together.

Here is the tender frame at the end of the day. All the welds on the top and bottom had to be ground smooth so other parts could be mounted to the frame.

Good to see your doing a porject for yourself instead of fixing something for the club or others.

I am pretty sure I have most of the steel for the frame and trucks in storage, going to have to get down there and start bringing it back home.

Hi Steve,
I just registered today and saw your post. It was a while ago that you posted this. I am looking to build a Ulin Shay and wanted to know if and where I can get a set of drawings, plans, castings, etc. so I can build one? It looks like something happened and can't put it together if somebody is out there that sells these. I would appreciate any information you might have. Thank you for your time. Have a nice day.

Good Morning,

Since it's been a couple weeks, I am checking to see if any progress has been made in finding your drawings. Just checking, Thanks. Have a good day.
