Crab restoration

 

On 5/15 Charlie took the clubs crab off of display and tried to run it on air. Unfortunatley it did not run and black goop came from the cylinder drains, it appers that all the steam oil that was left in it over the years gummed up. On 5/19 I took the crab home to give it a good inspection. I removed the right cylinder and found it was covered in hardened oil residue and the d-valve rod was loose. I also found the rod packing has turned into some sort of elastic goop and prevented the d-valve from moving freely. The cylinder bore looked good and had no scratches or ovbious wear. I have to get some new packing and gasket material before I reassemble the cylinder and move on to the left side. Once I get both sides cleaned and reassembled I will try to run the engine on air, if I can get it running smooth I will begin building a boiler and looking for the other parts that are missing. I have not seen the hand pump or water tank around. I will also need to build a operators car. It should be a fun starter project and hopefull be done before the new year.
