Depends on a few things. Clearance from the top of rail to the boottm of car is "supposed to" be 2 1/2 inches, per 49 CFR 215.121(a). The height of the rail itself would be between 5 and 7 inches depending on the type of rail. The rail may sit further above the tie on a tieplate. The tie may have a further depression in the middle (like concrete ties) or the rails may be sinking into the tie. All that's assuming you are thin enough and are able to lie down flat and stay laid down. Not be sucked up by the passing motion. Not panic. Not snag clothes. Not get clipped by something and have an involuntary reaction and raise part of your body. Definitely dangerous any way you slice it, and railroad people are very opposed to danger. There really isn't much call for an ordinary passenger to need to do this. Even if you fall off a subway platform onto the track, you'll usually find there is a big empty area under the platform itself, specifically to give people somewhere to go.References :

Mark is right on the cotton gins. The bgisegt one was Southeast of Thornton and Main, where that big pipe plant is now. The big buildings of the pipe plant are the original gin buildings. There were more buiding closer to Thornton but they were torn down more than 10 years ago.Besides the current industrial park spur, there were spurs leading into the gin complex West of the yard area (West of the underpass) as well as a spur running out of the West end of the yard across Main (just East of the underpass) that served the building that is still there (West of the feed store near the Cotton Belt boxcar used for storage). The North rails of the yard served the businesses along first street. There was also a group of rail served buildings along Main St. between the depot and Arizona Grain I belive that the big shed (now gone) was the packing plant. Arizona Grain hasn't changed much since the 1980s. I believe that the metal scrap yards South of the depot (across Main Ave.) had a spur at one time as well. Out West there were the two spurs leading across the highway from Casa Grande siding (Frito Lay and Abbott the two big complexes North of Casa Grande siding). Farther West there was the spur that led to the underground mine. The industrial park has the most rail served businesses. Both sides of the tracks had numerous spurs leading to businesses. Some are still there (the pipe plant and packing plant), many buildings have changed usage or are closed up.Tom F

I am looking for a photo of the D&RG depot located at Park City, Utah. The depot was abandom in around 1900, and the D&RG used the U.P. depot after that. D&RG gave up the route through Parley's Canyon to Salt Lake City in 1948, and took up their tracks.

The 2101 and 2201 are both in the north bay shops being rebuilt. I'm an elcetrician there . The rebuilds are coming slow due to lack of manpower, but I hear they want the 2201 done by march. Are you selling any of your collection?
