hay Steve I would think a rocket powered loco could be vary smooth. maybe you should build one of them

a rocket engine might use too much fuel, i would keep it simple, and use a jet engine.

That crane was built by Jerry Brown. He is a member of the Southern California Home Shop Machinists.
